Self reflection..... I guess?

Ichthyosis Awareness Month Part 2

If you're inconsistent and you know it clap your hands! *awkward silence* If you're inconsistent and you know it clap your hands! *crickets* if you're inconsistent and you know it and you really wanna show it, if you're inconsistent and you know it clap your hands! *slow claps* *stares into the camera*

  N E WAYS

Hello hello, it's your favourite, inconsistent "blogger" in the entire world! I hope you guys are doing great, I'm pretty okay myself actually. Thank you for asking.

It's been a long while since we've chatted for a bit now hasn't it? Phew let's start the ranting.

Growing up in a society where beauty standards somehow have always played a part, having a rare skin condition doesn’t help much. The line between bettering the condition of your skin and looking “beautiful” according to the “standards” set gets blurred quite often. You can never get rid of those thoughts forever; you can be in your bad beep era one day but a sad blip in your life the other due to these very intrusive thoughts. Such was the case with me and probably somewhat still is. Getting questioned about why I look the way I do from a very young age affected how I looked at myself and my perception about how people looked at me. This led me to believe that whenever I meet new people, they’ll immediately have a negative reaction, I’d be hesitant in whatever little thing I did in front of them.

There would be this shift from hesitance to suspicion as the conversation would progress and I’d be forced to think that maybe this person is nice but whatever they’re doing comes out of sympathy and pity. Over the years – or more like this year my perception has had a complete 180 and now I sometimes think that maybe people are not as bad as I thought they were and maybe there’s literally no point in me having a negative self-image.

Last year was no less than a rollercoaster of emotions, no bestie, leaving school isn’t as easy as you think it might be. I had this fear of going through those same bloody feelings all over again, a repeat of 2011 in 2021; bullying, name calling and all the other not so wanted things. I had expected a plethora of questions the moment I entered the classroom but no one even gave me the time of day (ironic I know) and went on with their day as they normally would at school (not gonna lie was kinda disappointed). This went on for the rest of the year, made a few friends of course but what surprised me was definitely the fact that not one of them asked me about my skin. And I realised that maybe I let a few of those bullies in my head and viewed myself through their eyes because in reality, in today’s world people do not care; they will get by their day, mind their business and stay hydrated that’s it!

There will always be a set of people who will have a lot to say about everything and nothing on the face of earth but you eventually learn to deal with them too and maybe even make a blog to rant about them. While we do have to address and acknowledge the evil, the good deserves a giant bear hug too. Take this as a thank you letter for all those beautiful people who don’t just go around asking people what is wrong with them and why is it so just to feed their curiosity.

  1. Great writing and it's really great that you thought of sharing something very inner and personal. More than all...it's the perspective that has made you more mature and grown-up... You sound like a perfect adult and that's the sign that you have also accepted as the world is with no ifs and buts... Great writing I am impressed and will look forward for sharing of inside stories that make you a human and that too a mature human... God Bless you

  8. Be positive.Every one is busy in their own world .Life is changing as you grow you will believe that no one has the time to ask you about your negative things.Flow with the time for time is the best healer. In school you are too young and inquisitive but as you grow it goes.Be happy.
